Community health development officers

We learnt from success elsewhere and adapted and expanded the community health development officer (CHDO) role to connect partners, support delivery and build local capacity.

Community health development officers are pivotal to turning action plans into reality. Funded by Oxfordshire County Council and hosted within district and city councils, they act as connectors within their communities. They support the implementation of any recommendations, bring partners together and find people and organisations to help bring ideas to life. They also help access grant funding and raise awareness of local services.

They help breakdown any hierarchy barriers between local system leaders and residents, so these decision makers can understand more about what’s working and what could be better.

Their role aligns with the Marmot approach by strengthening community assets and reducing health inequalities. They enable collaboration and help maintain a visible presence in local networks which has been identified as a major strength in building resilient, healthy communities.
